Letters from Iwo Jima

Yesterday I went to the cinema and watched „Letters from Iwo Jima“ a day before I have seen „Flags of our Fathers„, both directed by Clint Eastwood. He had the interesting idea of shooting a war movie from the point of view of both sides. „Letters from Iwo Jima“, the better of the two movies, is about the hopeless defense of Iwo Jima by the Japanese, a barren Island in the Pacific of strategic importance to their home country. „Flags of our Fathers“ follows three soldiers, who were on the historic photo that showed six soldiers raising the flag over Iwo Jima. This movie emphasizes the propaganda machine behind the war. The three soldiers were consequently portrayed as heroes to sell war-loans. The problem arises from the fact that they were not the first ones to raise the flag on Mount Surabachi, they simply „reenacted“ for a photo with a larger flag.
„Letters from Iwo Jima“ is a very good movie, which shows the senselessness and madness of war, one of the best anti-war movies I have seen so far. A must see!
„Flags of our fathers“ is a good movie, but in my opinion fails to emphasize the problems facing the three soldiers. If you have time go and watch it, both movies are still running in cinemas across Germany.
